New Release!

Beyond Dewey & Hahn: Foundations for Experiential Education

Clifford Knapp and Tom Smith recently released their long-awaited Beyond Dewey & Hahn: Foundations for Experiential Education (January 2009). This two-volume book profiles more than three dozen experiential education luminaries, from Rousseau and Pestalozzi to Freire, Petzoldt and Yu.

The list is long and distinguished, and the genesis of this book makes for an interesting and eclectic read. To quote the book's editors:

"This project began after one of our students asked the question, 'If I want to understand experiential education, what should I be reading beyond Dewey and Hahn?' ... This book is not an attempt to formulate a comprehensive philosophy for experiential education. We believe, however, that this book of selected biographies will be helpful to people who are developing their own philosophies of experiential education. We agree with Gamaliel Bradford who wrote: 'History is best understood through biography. People are the makers of history.'" (2009, p. 2).

While it is not a linear approach to exploring the"Foundations for Experiential Education," it does make for an interesting and illuminating read for any student of experiential education - whether you're just starting down the EE trail or have long been hiking it.

The book will soon be available at a discount to members in the AEE eStore. For more information, email Tom Smith.
PNW
Member Profile - Passages Northwest

From Erica Nixon-Mack, Program Director, Passages Northwest

Passages Northwest (PNW) works with girls to inspire courage and leadership through integrated exploration of the arts and the natural environment. We offer after school programs, wilderness adventures, custom courses, and workshops as well as trainings to share our expertise.

While PNW serves a diverse clientele, we primarily work with people in urban areas. Typically our courses are comprised of participants from a variety of socio economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. More than half come to us on scholarship and over a third are girls of color.

Our goal is to have participants leave with a sense of confidence and connectedness. They may have had no previous exposure to experiential education techniques, rock climbing, backpacking, camping, and yet they leave with these skills as well as strategies for effective communication and conflict resolution.

CRC Project Fund

From Paul Shirilla, University of Wisconsin- River Falls,Chair of CRC

The Council of Regional Chairs (CRC) has a goal of improving the field of experiential education by developing and supporting a community of practitioners and experiential programs. To that end, CRC sets aside a certain amount of money in the CRC Fund each year to be given out in the form of small regional grants. This amount varies as does the size of the grant. A typical amount might be in the range of $250 to $1,000.

The goal of the CRC Project Fund is to support projects that will bring positive benefits to the region and to AEE as a whole. We encourage any region working on an event or project that aims to strengthen experiential education to apply for support through the CRC Project Fund.

Regional leaders should be aware of and involved in any Project Fund applications. Click here for more information and to download the application.
