News from the President of the AEE Board of Directors
christianitin
By Dr. Christian M. Itin, MSW, Eureka, California

On behalf of the AEE Board of Directors, I would like to extend my invitation for you to join with YOUR association in Las Vegas this fall and make this year's 38th Annual International AEE Conference the largest gathering of experiential educators ever. What would it say to the world if 2500 people gathered in Las Vegas who were committed in some way to the ideas, principles, philosophy, theory, methodology (etc.) of this thing we believe in and call experiential education? I know many of us love to gather in relatively small groups, but I also know that coming together with many voices is a powerful statement to the world. This years conference is the least expensive it has been in years. I would challenge those who have not been to an international conference in several years to come back. If you have never been, make this your first, and if you were planning to come, bring someone with you. It would be amazing to create an energy in Vegas and have it NOT stay in Vegas! And you don't want to miss that! Read more.

AEE Accreditation News aeeaccreditationstamp_

By Shawn Tierney, AEE Director of Programs

It is a busy time of year for the accreditation program with a number of programs hosting site visits including Pioneer Adventure in Michigan, Prescott College in Arizona, Sterling College in Vermont, Deer Hill Expeditions in Colorado, and Woodson Wilderness Challenge in North Carolina.

I recently presented accreditation workshops at the Southeast and West Regional Conferences in addition to the Therapeutic Adventure Best Practices Conference where our new therapeutic standards were presented. During these travels I solicited feedback that is informing significant changes to our accreditation program. These changes are being driven by the need to enhance the overall value of accreditation while making the process less formidable and more cost effective.

Lastly, in April I piloted a new program evaluation service that AEE will soon be launching. This new service will meet a growing market demand for improving a program’s quality and risk management components using a standards based, peer review approach. Look for more details regarding these exciting changes in next month’s enews!

Over 90 professionals gathered in May in Columbus, Ohio to celebrate adventure therapy practices and community. Hosted by Camp Mary Orton the conference featured world class speakers including: Lee Gillis, Christian Itin, Tony Alvarez, Mark Ames, Gil Greene, and Maurie Lung. Topics included the state of experiential education, incorporating research into practice, how to undertake the task of making research and evidence-based practice more available to practitioners, and how to build a meaningful community. Workshop topics included information on best practices, research, ethics, cultural competence, trauma informed adventure therapy and theory. A progressive community dinner was framed by Mark Ames and his telling of his own hero’s journey. Three campfires were graciously hosted by member organizations Alaska Crossings, Wendigo Lakes and Coyote Trails. Several participants have contacted us to comment on their positive experience, “I can’t believe how emotional and powerful it was, I feel changed.” Thank you to everyone involved. American Camp Association Youth Outcome Measuresenews_ACA

By Deb Bialeschki, ACA

The American Camp Association has responded to a growing interest in outcomes measurement with the development of our Youth Outcomes Battery (YOB). This tested set of measures provide camps and other youth programs with instruments that focus on ten common youth outcomes: friendship skills, independence, teamwork, family citizenship, interest in exploration, responsibility, perceived confidence, affinity for nature, camp connectedness, and problem-solving confidence. While the battery was designed with the camp setting in mind the measures are focused on strong developmental outcomes that are not predicated on particular settings. For more information about the ACA YOB, go to (http://www.acacamps.org/members/outcomes/index.php).

RAFI_Willow
By Elena Broaddus, Cebu City, Cebu, Phillipines

There are no impossibilities if a group will go hand in hand, achieve teamwork and trust each other. This is one of the lessons learned during team-building activities facilitated by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc (RAFI). "It’s learning not only for your head, but for your heart,” explained Jennifer Ferraren about the games and initiatives she participated in during a seminar facilitated by RAFI, a Filipino NGO operating throughout the Visayas region of the Philippines. Jennifer is the president of the Women’s Cooperative of Canduman, a government resettlement area home to a large number of impoverished families that’s currently the site of a community development and urban renewal project run by RAFI.
