Highlights of the 2010 AEE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference RockyMountain1

By Kirsten Kindt, AEE

The Rocky Mountain Regional Conference was exceptional due to a great mix of workshops that were spread walking-distance around beautiful Lander, Wyoming. The student blocks were fantastic and the keynote speakers, climbers Mike Lilygren and Steve Bechtel, were not only inspiring, but super funny. The Jalan Crossland Band and the auction were both really entertaining and the community dinner was key to first-rate networking. Going to a good regional conference like this one, reminds me of why I am here - to support so many wonderful people that do amazing, challenging work. I look forward to next year at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah.

To Friends and Acquaintances of Wilma Mankiller

From Rita Yerkes, President, Yerkes Consulting LLC

I wanted to bring your attention to the passing of Wilma Mankiller from cancer in early April. She was the first woman chief of the Cherokee Nation and AEE was lucky enough to have her as a keynote speaker in the 90's. Wilma received the Medal of Freedom Award from President Clinton for her work and she was a wonderful woman!!! She revitalized the Cherokee Nation’s tribal government and improved its education, health and housing. She died in her home near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She was 64. Read more.

We’re excited to announce that Chris and I became parents on April 13th, 2010 when we welcomed little Riley into our world. A whopping 9 lbs 2 oz, he’s a precious addition to our little family. If there’s one thing I hope for Riley in this world, it’s that we are able to work each day towards preserving a healthy, beautiful, and peaceful environment for his generation and the many generations that will follow him. I’m hoping we’ll both be able to make the trip to Vegas in November—I’d love for ya’ll to meet him.

NOLS Risk Management Training
NOLSLOGO1
By Liz Touhy, Risk Management Senior Consultant, NOLS Professional Training

We recently heard from Alaska Semester graduate Jay Parker about his experience in the NOLS Risk Management Training. He attended the training to improve his risk management practices at his company, Mountain Element. Here is what he had to say:

The Risk Management Training was so well done; it is vintage NOLS! Our instructor, David Yacubian, was fun clear, knowledgeable, and clearly an expert. Risk management can be a very overwhelming term, not to mention an overwhelming process. If it had not been for this course I would be completely lost as I build my adventure company, Mountain Element. While the training gave me the tools to start building a more thorough short-term and long-term risk management plans, I am also thankful that I found a group of outdoor companies and organizations that are committed to educating the public about risk management.

Upcoming NOLS Risk Management Training:

May 12-13, Sausalito, CA
May 12-13, San Francisco, CA
October 13-14, Colorado Springs, CO
November 9-10, Keystone, CO

By Kurt Richter, Charles Reigeluth, Indiana University

We are looking for schools that have the following rare features to meet the individual needs of their students: 1) Student progress is described based on individual mastery as opposed to the use of traditional A-F grades or percentage assessments, and report cards track attainments; 2) Every student has a personal learning plan; 3) Grouping for learning is based on attainments and learning-plan goals. If you know a school like this, please link to this brief survey for our research. It will only take about 2-3 minutes. Contact us to discuss this survey with you and to share results.
