AEE eNews Update December 2008

AEE Annual International Conference Success From Paul Limoges, CEO, AEEThe 36th Annual International AEE Conference in Vancouver, Washington, was a resounding success. I knew when I started my position as CEO in June that I had found a home, but now that I have experienced the AEE International Conference from the inside, I know I am ready to really hit my stride. Around every corner, in every hallway and workshop, I was energized by everyone I met. There are so many members willing to provide leadership and share their talents and professional and personal experience that I was quite often humbled.  It is impossible for me to single out any one person, meeting, presentation, exhibitor, sponsor, or entertainer to thank because I was constantly reaching for my notepad, asking for a business card, or sharing in genuine laughter. I must express my gratitude, however, to everyone involved in making the conference so special including the Conference Host Committee and Advisory Committee, workshop presenters, Awards Committee and Recipients, the AEE Staff, Board of Directors, Council of Regional Chairs, Council on Research & Evalutaion, the Group Leadership Council, the Accreditation Council, AEE members and attendees of the conference.   Please join us this spring at one of our Regional Conferences and for next year's Annual International AEE Conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

AEE MarchFourth - Yes We Can
From
Andy Stone, Host Committee, AEE 36th Annual International Conference In Vancouver, Washington on November 8, 2008 at the 36th Annual AEE International Conference at precisely 9:15 p.m., something happened. If you were there, you know. Even if you weren't, what this is about is the back story. And while this is a great opportunity to brag a bit about some things the host committee did, that's not the point. The point is to recognize the intention, collaboration, and planning that went into that event. It is the same that you bring to your best programming. The back story to that event will remind you how and why you do what you do.

Where Theory Meets Practice  AEE is excited to announce the release of Theory & Practice of Experiential Education - a completely revised and expanded 4th edition of the EE classic, The Theory of Experiential Education. In the almost three decades since the first edition was released, there have been key developments in the theory and practice of experiential education, and this edition is reflective of this evolution.

As those of you with keen eyes noticed, the word "Practice" has been added to the book's title, and that is because the editors of this edition (Karen Warren, Ph.D., Denise Mitten, Ph.D., and TA Loeffler, Ph.D.) embrace the concept of experiential education as both a philosophy and a methodology.
To celebrate the release of the long-awaited revise of this EE classic, AEE is extending a 10% discount off both the member and nonmember price until December 31. To receive the discount, simply enter the coupon code TPEE08 upon checking out!  Book Details: ISBN: 978-0-929361-17-8; 578 pages, printed here in Colorado by an FSA-certified printer using all green practices. It added a bit to the price, but we hope you'll agree that supporting sustainable practices is worth it; member price $55; list price $67; 20 percent discount extended to qualified bookstores and vendors.

If you are interested in a leadership position with the CAG or to be involved with the Montreal conference please email me directly.

Old Folks & Allies Update
From
JoAnna Allen (pictured)At the AEE conference in Vancouver, Washington, JoAnna Allen was chosen to chair the OFA PG for 2009 (in absentia).   Tom Smith, Cliff Knapp and Tom Lindblade served steadfastly in 2008 to lead the group. The project to collect bio-pages of AEE elders has already started with Tom Smith's quick model submission.  They will appear on the OFA website with periodic updates.  JoAnna welcomes suggestions of who she should pursue (nag/nudge) to submit bio-pages for what will become a web directory that will be especially useful for anyone seeking mentors or expertise.  Our goal is to share the wisdom and preserve the legacy of OFAs for generations to come.

Women's Professional Group
From
Anja Whittington WPG would like to extend a big thanks to Anna Ridder for her service as a co-chair and welcome Sara Boilen as our incoming chair.  Also, stay tuned for our next newsletter - which we're aiming to have out sometime this month.

Evidence-Based Training & Development Update From Brian Capron
Vancouver was a wonderful experience! Great people, thought-provoking speakers, lots of stimulating discussions, new ideas from workshops and the camaraderie of far-flung colleagues, all compressed into 96 hours. My co-workers and I took some time to hike at Multnomah Falls and Beacon Rock in the Columbia River Gorge- as you can see we had liquid sunshine most of the week!
The Experience-Based Training and Development Professional Group met to network and plan future initiatives. There is a lot of new energy and movement towards some exciting engagement opportunities for our EBTD community. More on these initiatives soon, via email and new dedicated EBTD website and listserve.
