eNews Update September

Please join us!

Please join us for the 36th Annual AEE International Conference in Vancouver, Washington.

Why register today? A couple of last year's Annual Conference Attendees said it best in our Annual Member Survey:
"It's such a gift to have an opportunity for practitioners, administrators, students, therapists, school teachers, and others to connect with one another and learn from each other."

"AEE conferences are a vehicle through which sound educational methods are shared."
From Outdoored.com Rick Curtis, November 2007
"The caliber of professionals in the field to network with and as presenters is the highest I've seen anywhere. Three days at an AEE Conference is like a week of personal coaching from the best in the business."

2008 Annual International Conference Scholarship Program

AEE would like to thank Jennifer Payne for managing the 2008 Annual International Conference Scholarship Program. Highlights of this year's program:
  • All 20 scholarships have been awarded.
  • We received the third highest number of applications in the history of the scholarship program (34), and the highest number in the past five years.
  • The committee included dedicated AEE Members Karen Ulendorf, Dave Ogrodowczyk, Nadine Budbill, Woody Belt, and was chaired by Jennifer Payne.
  • The committee had some tough decisions to make as the applications were very inspiring and of high quality.
  • A large percentage of the applicants were students (more than in the recent past); graduates and undergraduates studying education, recreation or social work.
  • Applicants were from all corners of the U.S. (17 states) and four different countries.
  • 17 scholarships were awarded to members, three to nonmembers who expressed an interest in future participation in AEE.
  • For half of the scholarship recipients, this will be their first annual international conference; many have attended regional conferences.
Research
Save the Date

The Association for Experiential Education and Project Adventure are excited to announce that the 5th Annual Research & Evaluation of Adventure Programming (REAP) Symposium will be held March 18-20, 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The purpose of the REAP Symposium:

  • To advance the adventure programming field through the production of evidence-based practices and related research
  • To connect funding agencies with programs/researchers
  • To involve a wide group of people in an ongoing dialogue about evidence-based research and practices
AEE's Council on Research & Evaluation (CORE) supports this effort as part of their mission to promote research and evaluation in experiential practices through technology, education and networking opportunities.

A call for proposals and registration on AEE's website will be available soon!

No Child Left Inside Act

From Abby Ybarra, Grassroots Coordinator, No Child Left Inside Coalition

We are pleased to report that environmental education won a major boost last week when the U.S. House of Representatives approved the No Child Left Inside Act of 2008. The bill received bipartisan support and was approved by a vote of 293 to 109. This is only one step in the process, but it is a major one and gives the NCLI Coalition enormous momentum to keep working to pass the bill in the months ahead.
For more information, see the Coalitions website No Child Left Inside.

Experience-Based Education

From an interview with Steve Seay, in Dallas, Texas

After 28 years if teaching secondary-school science, Steve Seay traded the confines of the classroom for new educational initiatives. Although he is proud of the nearly three decades he spent teaching at St. Mark's School of Texas, he has always believed that the experience-based education that takes place in the outdoors---especially on farms and ranches---is as valuable as the formal education received in traditional school settings. "Students cannot acquire some skills, like self-reliance, while sitting in a classroom," says Steve.

An International Perspective

By Alexander Rose, Universidad Catolica de Valencia, San Vicente Martir, Espana. Alexander is a doctoral student.

As soon as we understand that a group is the smallest expression of a society, as experiential educators acting on this small society, we can reach deeper and change ideas and beliefs that would be very difficult to do in more traditional ways. My goal is to empower both the group and the individuals, keeping in mind their differences and similarities, and being open to learning myself.

I believe the power of experiential education comes from participants being much more aware of others and getting to know themselves better as well.
