In the Promise of Wilderness Therapy, Jennifer Davis-Berman and Dene Berman draw on their combined 30-plus years of working with struggling adolescents to clearly outline how and why wilderness therapy works. As therapists who practice both in traditional and wilderness settings, they have written this book because they have seen the power that wilderness can have on the therapeutic process. In its pages you’ll find a well thought-out mix of practical advice, historical and theoretical foundations, frank discussions, and personal opinion that opens the door to a new way of treating longstanding adolescent challenges in new and inspired ways.
In nine easy-to-access chapters, the authors provide information you’ll need to assess whether wilderness therapy is right for the adolescent in your life. You’ll learn about the unique challenges faced by today’s youth and how those challenges impact adolescent behavior. You’ll understand the origins of the field, as well as the theories on which it is based. You’ll be able to distinguish hard facts from marketing hyperbole. You’ll understand the difference between licensing, credentialing, and accreditation, enabling you to determine a program’s legitimacy. You’ll have access to the most recent research on the effectiveness of wilderness therapy. You’ll learn about the different types of programs that use wilderness therapy and who they serve. And finally, as you work your way through the series of guiding questions in Chapter 8, you’ll not only be able to determine whether wilderness therapy holds promise for the adolescent in your life, but feel more confident as you embark on the program research and selection process.
Whether you’re the parent of an adolescent exploring alternatives for your child, or a mental health professional looking to learn more about the field, this guide has the answers to your questions.

About the Authors:
Jennifer Davis-Berman is an academic and practicing social worker. After earning her MSW at the Ohio State University in 1982 and her Ph.D. from Ohio State in 1985, she joined the faculty at the University of Dayton, where she has been a professor of social work since 1986.
Her interest in wilderness therapy was first sparked by her personal love for the outdoors. In 1984, she and Dene decided to add a wilderness therapy component to their counseling practice (Lifespan Counseling). Since founding the wilderness therapy arm of their business—Wilderness Therapy Program—Jennifer’s interest in wilderness therapy programs for youth has only grown. Over the past 20-plus years, she and Dene have led youth into the wilderness and never cease to be amazed by the power of the wilderness as a treatment setting.
Jennifer also has been extensively involved in research and writing in the field of wilderness therapy. She has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and book chapters, and in 1994 she and Dene co-authored Wilderness Therapy: Foundations, Theory and Research. Jennifer and Dene live with their children in Dayton, Ohio.
Dene Berman, Ph.D., is a practicing psychologist and a Clinical Professor in the School of Professional Psychology at Wright State University. His specialty is working with children and adolescents, which he does through Lifespan Counseling, the counseling practice he and Jennifer launched in the early 1980s. Adding a wilderness therapy component to their practice has allowed Dene to use his expertise in serving youth in alternative settings.
Dene maintains an active interest and passion for wilderness therapy by writing for publications, presenting at national and international conferences, and providing wilderness therapy training to counselors and outdoor leaders. Dene also has served as the Chair of the Therapeutic Adventure Professional Group of AEE and has been the President of the Board of Trustees of the Wilderness Education Association.
