FROM THE CEO

SPRING RENEWAL
The AEE spring conferences never fail to renew my belief in the power of experiential education. I spent parts of March and April on the road, attending two regional conferences, as well as the Fourth Research and Evaluation in Adventure Programs (REAP) Symposium in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was amazed by the variety of attendees and the breadth of information shared at the symposium. Nearly 70 researchers and practitioners shared methods, tools, results and funding guidance for experiential programs in a variety of settings. To learn more about REAP, see the article in In the News and/or review the proceedings at http://www.chhs.unh.edu/kin_oe/reap2008.html

AEE’s Council on Research and Evaluation (CORE) met during the symposium to share information about structure and plans to advance research in the experiential education community. See the article in In the News or contact CORE@aee.org for more information.

At AEE regional conferences, I engaged in transformational activities, heard great music, and met tons of people (in traditional conversations and during energetic get-acquainted activities)–passionate and dedicated educators and practitioners who achieve awesome results in schools, environmental ed centers, 4-H programs, special ed services, and wilderness and corporate programs. I was inspired once again, and want to find more ways to inspire others with what we do. I want others to hear these stories. And as it turns out, so do many of our members....

In a recent AEE member survey, we heard again the need to educate the public, decision-makers and funders about experiential education with the goal of building more awareness and respect for what we do. As one respondent suggests, “AEE should be the go-to organization for media, legislators, and others who want the definitive word about effective, transformational education. To do that, you’ve got to refine the ‘story.’ Tell it often, and get widespread exposure.” I know you have stories to share–professional journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles, newsletter testimonials, etc. Send them to me and I will get them out–on our website, in media releases, through news outlets, to funders and other organizations.

As we increase the research base of our practices, expand our resources, collaborate with other organizations, and tell our story, I can retire from AEE this summer knowing that I have helped spread the word “beyond the choir” to where it can make an impact. Keep up the great work: We are making progress!

Warmest regards,
Pat Hammond
