WPG Leaders
Leadership in the Women’s Professional Group (WPG)
 

WPG Mission
 
The WPG Professional Group is rooted in education programming and research for women and girls.  WPG serves a dual function:
 
1) provides a structure to voice the interests, needs, and concerns of women within AEE and in the larger professional community;
 
2) serves as a forum to support, network and mentor each other around the joys, pains and problems women meet within the workplace
 
 
Who we are:

The Women's Professional Group consists of members who are engaged in all areas of the experiential education field. Members include, but are not limited to, teachers, outdoor educators and field staff, program coordinators, students, business owners, and many more.
 

Volunteer Positions
 
-3 Chairs
-Optional:  Regional Contacts and PG/PAG Liaisons
 
Definitions


AEE has created networks of experiential education professionals within areas of professional scholarship or practice and through sharing similar issues, views and ideas on topics.
 
-Professional Affiliation Group (PAG):  networks based on personal identity such as age, race, gender, etc.
 
-Profession Based Group (PG):   networks based on profession or employment area.
-Regional Groups:   networks based on geographical regions where members work and/or live.


Election/Nomination Procedure
 
WPG Chairs   
Chairs serve a 3 year term beginning and ending at the AEE Annual Conference each year.
Chairs are nominated in the months preceding the conference. Calls for nominees are placed in the WPG newsletter, Horizons, and other regional and PG/PAG newsletters. Nominees need to be members of AEE and WPG for at least 1 year. Nominees are voted in at the AEE Conference.
Chairs may serve one consecutive term.
 
Regional Contacts
Regional contacts serve a one year term beginning and ending at the AEE Annual Conference each year. Contacts volunteer for this position, and there can be more than one contact for each region.  Calls for volunteers are placed in the WPG newsletter, Horizons, and other regional and PG/PAG newsletters and recruited during the AEE Conference. Volunteers must be members of AEE and WPG.  Volunteers can serve as many terms as they wish.
 
PG & PAG Liaisons
PG / PAG liaisons volunteer for this position for as long as they desire, and there can be more than one contact for each PG/PAG.  WPG Chairs recruit liaisons by contacting the chairs of the PG/PAGs. Volunteers must be members of AEE. 
 

Decision Making
 
WPG Chairs are responsible for decisions affecting the oversight, management and fiscal responsibility of the PAG. Decisions are made via consensus, which may include designating decision-making authority to an individual under specific circumstance. Chairs often include the perspective and insight of regional contacts, past chairs, and active WPG members when making decisions.
 
Regional Contacts are responsible for helping to coordinate regional activities and events. Contacts can include a WPG Chair in decision making if needed to ensure proper PAG protocol is being upheld.

PG/PAG Liaisons are responsible with WPG Chairs for decisions related to WPG & PG/PAG activities and events that they choose to co-coordinate. Contacts can include a their PG/PAG Chair in decision making if needed to ensure proper PG/PAG protocol is being upheld.
 
 
Roles & Responsibilities
 
WPG Chair
 
Role/Criteria for Professional Affiliation Group:
 
-Pursue the WPG mission through a variety of means based on the needs, interests, and energy of members.
 
-Ensure that WPG continues to meet the PAG criteria as outlined by AEE 2006 and noted below. (Chairs should keep this updated with current outlines by contacting AEE-Membership Coordinator.) 
-Offers a community for people with similar experiences, concerns and values within AEE.
-Has a clearly defined mission and goals consistent with AEE’s mission.
-Has a structure that supports efficient operations and provides clear and consistent communication to its membership, the staff and the Board of Directors.
-Contributes to the professional development of its members and AEE as a whole.
-Contributes to the promotion of experiential education through its connections, projects and initiatives. Activities should support AEE’s strategic plan.
-Maintains a membership of at least 15 persons.

Responsibilities:
 
-Follow through on PAG responsibilities as outlined by AEE 2006 and noted below. (Chairs should keep this updated with current outlines by contacting AEE-Membership Coordinator.)
Overall
-Conduct all aspects of business in accordance with AEE’s Code of Conduct and in ways that support AEE’s misson, reflect positively on the association, protect AEE’s status as a 501C(3) organization and increase AEE’s membership.
-Bring the work of your AG into the overall AEE community (i.e., contribute to Horizon newsletter, have a visible presence at conferences).
 
Leadership
-Appoint a representative for a three-year term to oversee the AG as well as attend AEE Leadership Summit meetings (held annually). Funding for these meetings comes from the AG budget supplied by AEE, CRC and PGs.
 
Finance
-Share a budget allocation contributed by AEE, the regions and the Profession-based groups
-Raise funds for proposals, projects and other needs not covered by the AG budget
 
Technology
-Maintain the AG page on the AEE website.
-Monitor and maintain the group web mail account.
 
AEE Annual International Conference
-Hold a workshop, professional development intensive (PDI) and/or pre-conference. AGs are encouraged to collaborate with Profession-Based Groups (PGs) on pre-conferences.
-Recruit workshop presenters for conferences.
-Conduct a business meeting for AG members and potential members.
-Jointly schedule and host a hospitality room with other AGs.
 
Publications
-Contribute to newsletters. We encourage AGs to publish their own biannual newsletter for their members, but at a minimum contribute to AEE’s newsletter Horizon, regional and/or professional group newsletters.
 

Additional optional responsibilities created by current/past WPG Chairs:
 
-Recruit and coordinate WPG Regional Contacts & PG/PAG Liaisons
-Create, distribute flyers and other WPG information
-Create mentor list. Assist in coordinating requests for mentors.
-Assist as needed and as available on PAG/PG co-projects as headed by other WPG members and affiliates.
-Women’s Outdoor Memorial Gathering
-Recruit women appointments to AEE Board, JEE Advisory and Review Committee
-Nominate women for AEE awards

WPG Regional Contact
 
Role: 
 
-To encourage regional networking and support between WPG members and friends and promote WPG in their region.
 
 
Responsibilities:
 
Note:  Regional Contacts follow through on responsibilities to their best of their abilities based on their energy and availability (time constraints).
 
-Do at least 1 WPG related networking activity in your region each quarter. Some examples include:
 
 Plan a hike, canoe trip, games day or any other fun, social gathering with other members/friends in your region
 
 Email / share information on upcoming workshops, trainings, resources, etc. in your region.
 
 Share WPG information, facilitate a workshop, or recruit/organize presenters for women/girl issues in AE/EE at AEE regional conferences, other AEE PG/PAG conferences, or other regional training
 
 Hold a WPG networking meeting or social gathering at an AEE Regional conference, other AEE PG/PAG conference, or other regional training
 
-Provide updates for WPG newsletters on networking or other activities/projects planned in your region. These updates can also be posted on the WPG webpage.
 
-Be available by email or phone to assist your regional  WPG members and friends as needed and as available. Your Name and contact information will be placed on the WPG webpage.
 
-Assist WPG Chairs in other activities if interested and have time

PG/PAG Liaisons
 
Role:
-To promote WPG activities and information in other PG/PAGs
 
Responsibilities:
 
-To coordinate presentations, workshops, and/or information on WPG issues as related to their PG or PAG during their pre-conferences, retreats, meetings, activities, etc.
 
-Provide updates for WPG newsletters on networking or other activities/projects planned in your PG or PAG that are relevant to WPG members and friends. These updates can also be posted on the WPG webpage.
 
-Be available by email or phone to assist WPG members and friends within your PG or PAG as needed and as available. Your name and contact information will be placed on the WPG webpage.
