Instructions for Authors

Journal of Experiential Education: Instructions to Authors

Purpose: The Journal of Experiential Education (JEE) presents scientific and conceptual inquiries into the study and practice of experiential education and its various subfields. The interdisciplinary diversity of topics in the JEE makes it of special interest to academicians, consultants, educators, practitioners and students of experiential education.

Three types of manuscripts are accepted for publication in the JEE:

Regular Articles: Regular articles present research findings, investigate relevant concepts or theories, or describe areas of programmatic interest in experiential education. These manuscripts are between 3,000 and 6,000 words in length and follow the general format of a research article (introduction, review of literature, methods, results, discussion, references).

Research Notes: Research notes include reviews of research on a specific area in experiential education, or short summaries of research studies. These manuscripts are between 1,000 and 3,000 words in length.

Book Reviews: Book reviews are between 600 and 750 words in length. All book reviews are solicited; no unsolicited reviews will be considered. Books for review should be sent to the attention of Book Review Editor. Email suggestions to mjswiderski@yahoo.com with "Book Review" in the subject line.

Manuscript submissions will be accepted with the understanding that their content is unpublished and not being submitted for publication elsewhere.

Authors must prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 5th edition).  Instructions on tables, figures, references, statistics and typing appear in the Manual.  The APA Manual is available from: APA Order Department, P.O. Box 92984, Washington, D.C. 20090-2984.  The Journal of Experiential Education requires that authors use inclusive language, that is, avoid in their manuscripts language that could be construed as sexist, racist or biased in other ways.  For guidelines, see pages 61-76 in the APA Manual.

Manuscript Submission Guidelines:

We request that authors with Internet access submit manuscripts electronically through the JEE website at http://jee.lakeheadu.ca.  First-time visitors to the site will need to register prior to submitting a manuscript and then follow the instructions provided.  Manuscripts must be submitted as an MS Word document or in .rtf format.

The second method, submission through regular mail service, is outlined below and should be used only if access to the JEE website is not possible.  While some of the procedures will not apply to documents submitted electronically, all authors are encouraged to read the section below for general submission guidelines.

1. Manuscript Format: All parts of the manuscript, including the title page, abstract, references, tables and figures, should be typewritten, double-spaced on one side of 8.5 x 11 inch white bond, in English. Allow margins of one inch on all sides, and number manuscript pages consecutively throughout.  The title page should include the full title of the paper (no longer than 12 words), the name of each author, the affiliation of each author, the mailing address of the principal author, and a word count for the manuscript.  The first page of text should begin with the full title of the paper, but NOT the name(s) of the author(s).

2. Abstract: The abstract should follow the title page and include the title of the manuscript, but NOT the name of the author(s). The abstract should summarize the main points of the article, and be no more than 150 words in length.

3. Keywords: Three to five keywords should appear three lines after the end of the abstract, and should be entered on the JEE website when submitting a paper online.

4. Tables and Figures:  Tables should be titled and numbered at the top of the table. They should be numbered consecutively as they appear in the text.  Tables should be clear and concise, and be able to stand alone. Complete headings and footnotes should be included to clarify entries.  Figures should be numbered consecutively, at the bottom of the figure, with a short and concise description. Fonts used in any table or figure should be compatible with that used in the text. All tables and figures should be referred to in the text with a notation made in the manuscript indicating approximately where each should be located. Each table and figure should appear on a separate sheet. Illustrations should be of professional quality and camera-ready. All tables and figures must appear in BLACK & WHITE only.

5. Literature Cited: All citations and references should follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 5th Edition, pp. 215-281).

Review Process via the Website:

When a manuscript is sent out for blind review, the evaluation of the reviewers, along with the Editor, will determine if the final recommendation to the author(s) is: (1) accept as is; (2) accept with minor revisions; (3) suggest revision and resubmission; (4) reject; or (5) not appropriate for the JEE. If accepted, the author(s) will be requested to resubmit a revised copy-edited paper through the website (in Word or .rtf format). Prospective authors should anticipate this process to take between three and six months.

Review Process via Hardcopy (ONLY FOR THOSE WITH NO ACCESS TO THE INTERNET):

Please submit three copies of the manuscript.  All copies must be clear, readable and on good quality paper. Authors should keep a copy of the manuscript to guard against loss.
