JEE - Instructions for Authors

Purpose. The Journal of Experiential Education presents scientific and conceptual inquiries into the study and practice of experiential education and its various subfields. The interdisciplinary diversity of topics in the Journal makes it of special interest to academicians, consultants, educators, practitioners, and students of experiential education. Four types of manuscripts are accepted for publication in the Journal:

  • Regular articles: Regular articles present research findings, investigate relevant concepts or theories, or describe areas of programmatic interest in experiential education. These manuscripts are between 3,000 and 6,000 words in length and follow the general format of a research article (introduction, review of literature, methods, results, discussion, references).
  • Research notes: Research notes include reviews of research on a specific area in experiential education, or short summaries of research studies. These manuscripts are between 1,000 and 3,000 words in length.
  • Perspectives: Perspectives are short explorations of particular aspects of experiential education praxis. These manuscripts are between 500 and 1,000 words in length.
  • Book Reviews: Book reviews are between 500 and 1,000 words in length. All book reviews are solicited; no voluntary contributed reviews will be considered. Books for review should be sent to the Editor.

Manuscript. Manuscripts will be accepted with the understanding that their content is unpublished and not being submitted for publication elsewhere. All parts of the manuscript, including the title page, abstract, references, tables, and illustrations, should be typewritten, double-spaced on one side of white bond, in English. Tables and illustrations should be numbered consecutively and titled, and each should appear on a separate sheet. Allow margins of one inch on all sides and number manuscript pages consecutively throughout. The title page should include the full title of the paper (no longer than 12 words), the name of each author, the affiliation of each author, the mailing address of the principal author, and a word count for the manuscript. The first page of text should begin with the full title of the paper, but not the name(s) of the author(s).

Abstract. An abstract should follow the title page and include the title, but not the author(s) of the manuscript. The abstract should summarize the main points of the paper and be no more than 150 words in length. Three to five keywords should appear in parentheses at the end of the abstract.

Tables and Illustrations. Tables should be clear and concise, and should be able to 'stand alone' in that complete headings and footnotes are included to clarify entries. Illustrations should be of professional quality and camera-ready. Fonts used in any illustrations should be compatible with that used in the text. All tables and illustrations should be referred to in the text and notation made in the manuscript indicating approximately where each should be located.

Literature Cited. Refer to this issue for examples of citation form in both the text and the list of references. All citations and references should follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Fifth Edition).

Review Process. Please submit four copies of your original manuscript to:

Alan Ewert
Department of Recreation and Park Administration
Indiana University
Bloomington, IN 47405 USA
Phone (812) 855-8116
Fax (812) 855-3998
e-mail aewert@indiana.edu

The manuscript will then be sent out for blind review. The evaluation of the reviewers, along with the editor, will determine if the final recommendation to the author is: (1) accept as is; (2) accept with minor revisions; (3) suggest revision and resubmission; (4) reject; or (5) not appropriate for the Journal. Do not submit a computer disk with your initial submission. After acceptance of manuscript, the author(s) will be requested to submit a paper copy and disk (in Word or WordPerfect) or in electronic format to the Editor. Prospective authors should anticipate this process to take between four to six months. Electronic submissions are not encouraged.
