Dan Miller, Acting CEO

Where did you grow up? Satellite Beach, FL
When did you start your job with AEE? Feb 2015 (although I have been a volunteer and presenter since 2011)
Top three favorite outdoor activities: 1) Backpacking 2) Rock Climbing 3) Expedition Canoeing
Why did you choose to work for AEE? I believe that education is a truly sacred charge and that we should all be working together to provide our students with the best educational experience possible. I take a great deal of pride in working for an organization that unites so many great people for this purpose.
Describe a highlight from your career: Prior to joining AEE, I worked with Outward Bound for 13 years as an instructor, course director, and eventually staffing coordinator. One of my favorite parts was taking adjudicated youth on 30-day canoe trips in FL. Becoming like family with those students was just as educational for me as it was for them.
Favorite travel destinations: Tasmania, New River Gorge, Boundary Waters, Costa Rica, and my backyard in Western North Carolina.
Favorite quote: "I regard it as the foremost task of education to ensure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an indefatigable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and above all, compassion.” Kurt Hahn
Favorite music: Keller Williams, Dave Matthews, Ani DiFranco, Michael Franti…the list goes on and on.
Favorite book: The Book on the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are: Alan Watts
What do you like to do while not at work? I enjoy quality time with my wife and daughter, getting outside, and playing a variety of musical instruments.

What would you say to someone thinking about getting their organization accredited? AEE accreditation offers a focused and effective way to improve your program, manage risks, and demonstrate to the public that you have a top-notch organization.
Describe two highlights from prior careers: Directing the Rio Grande Program for the Voyageur Outward Bound School, and working with students, staff, and faculty as Dean of Resident Degrees, at Prescott College.
Describe a highlight from your experiences with AEE: After my first year as an Outward Bound instructor I attended an AEE Conference. Finding out there were many wonderful people I could learn about experiential education from was quite an eye-opener!
Favorite type of travel destinations: Living in the high chaparral country of Arizona makes whitewater rivers and oceans my favorite places to visit.
Favorite music: Blues
What do you like to do while not at work? I enjoy playing and listening to music, hiking with my dogs in the Prescott National Forest and watching soccer with my wife Barb and son Josh, and science fiction shows with my daughter Rachael.
