Capacity: 30 participants

Date & Time: Wednesday, November 9th, 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Location: Blue Ridge Leaders Room in Eureka Hall

Cost: $300 (10% off for AEE Members)

Presenters: Steve Smith and Christine Norton

Christine Norton received her Ph.D. in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago and works with a wide range of populations in experiential education roles. Steve Smith is the author of Beneficial Risks and founder of Experiential Consulting, a risk management consultancy focused on outdoor programs.

Description:

As experiential learning programs attempt to be more inclusive, traditional risk management systems may lag behind these efforts, or even work at cross-purposes with them. This workshop is meant to help illuminate the many ways in which risk management systems can evolve to mirror our collective efforts to be more inclusive, and also to highlight specific concepts and strategies (informed by clinical social work) in which outdoor programs can take a trauma-informed approach to risk management and program design. This workshop will enable participants to assess their own program's practices and pursue inclusive, trauma-informed risk management systems / program design.

Led by a risk management consultant and author, and a licensed social worker who specializes in experiential education, this workshop will enable participants to assess their own program's practices and leave with valuable tools for inclusive, trauma-informed risk management systems and program design.
