About the Pre-Conference:

Behavioral First Responder Level 1 is an 8-hour, in-person certification for outdoor education professionals. It teaches field triage for mental health crises: how to assess risk, de-escalate, document, and know when to call for support. 

This is not therapy training. It is the behavioral equivalent of WFR. Practical skills built for guides, camp staff, university outdoor program instructors, and adaptive program leaders who are already managing mental health situations in the field without a clear framework.

Participants leave with skills they apply the next day: suicidal ideation, panic attacks, disordered eating, and difficult group dynamics. No waiting, no theory.

Presenter: Curt Davidson

In addition to his position at Alpenglow Education, Curt is a faculty member at Utah State University in the Quinney School of Environment and Natural Resources. He's interested in mental health and the intersection of natural environment education and climate change. With over 20 years of experience as a field instructor, he's also the author of peer-reviewed publications and two books. His research focuses on Outdoor Recreation, Adventure Education, and its impact on society.
