Presenters: Jen Stanchfield, Deidra Goodwin

Jen inspires experiential educators worldwide with her engaging and informative workshops that blend the art of facilitation and reflection with neuroscience. Her creativity and depth of knowledge stem from three decades of diverse experience as a mental health clinician, classroom teacher, adventure, and adult educator. Jen is known internationally for helping experiential educators develop facilitation techniques, increase engagement, promote social-emotional skills, and for her contributions to the field in making reflection an accessible, active, and engaging part of learning.

Deidra (she/they) has been facilitating for over 10 years and is currently the Program Manager for the American Conservation Experience's National Park Service Academy and Experiential and Outdoor Education graduate student. Deidra's research interests include reflection and professional development in the outdoor industry.

Experiential educators recognize that reflection is key to creating lasting lessons and seek tools to facilitate it with groups. But, how often do we lead by example and take time for self-reflection as practitioners?

Join this interactive session and ignite practitioner-reflection with a collaborative exploration of our unique why as experiential educators. We will engage in a series of active reflection activities and delve into theories, practices, and language that have shaped our field - balanced with best-practices and modern neuroscience. Gain new perspectives on your individual style and day-to-day facilitation choices to become an intentional, authentic, and effective practitioner.

Participants will leave with:

  • New perspectives and context to inform their philosophical why
  • Engaging reflective tools and techniques including follow up resources
  • Insights into the various philosophical models that have shaped the EE field
  • Enhanced practitioner literacy, so practitioners learn to become good consumers of philosophical models, research, and practices.
  • Compelling neuroscience that will inform their practice
  • The ability to better understand and articulate their why as a practitioner
  • Resources for further exploration including a reading list.
