AEE Recognizes Progress on Client Rights Standards Across OBH Accredited Programs

In response to evolving practices and a growing international dialogue around client safety, informed consent, and trauma-informed care, the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) developed and introduced new accreditation standards at the end of 2023 focused on enhancing client voice and safeguarding additional client rights.

These updates mark a significant shift in the field of Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare (OBH), particularly in areas related to informed consent, treatment of involuntary clients, trauma-informed care, and the movement away from punitive practices. The urgency of implementing these changes has been underscored by recent tragedies in the field, including the death of a young participant at Trails Carolina, which has added gravity and immediacy to the call for reform.

In August 2024, all OBH Accredited programs were asked to come into alignment with four key standards as an early measure of commitment to enhanced ethical and client-centered care. AEE is proud to acknowledge the proactive response and leadership of 12 OBH Accredited programs that have already taken measurable steps to meet or exceed these updated standards.

“While it is not typical for us to require alignment with new standards immediately following their release, the seriousness of recent events gave it urgency,” said Steve Pace, Director of Accreditation at AEE. “These reforms are not only timely—they are essential.”

The new OBH standards, published in late 2023, are also closely aligned with emerging federal legislation that supports increased transparency, accountability, and protection for vulnerable populations receiving residential or outdoor behavioral care. Find the Standards Manuals here.

“These programs are helping set a new bar for safety, compassion, and respect in outdoor therapeutic programming,” said Steve Pace. “We commend their dedication to fostering environments that prioritize the rights, dignity, and voices of those they serve.”
